Signs of Hidden Water Damage

Hidden water damage is not always obvious. Stains, changes in materials or persistent damp odors can indicate moisture, but they do not establish the source on their own.

Look for material changes

Peeling paint, swollen trim, buckling flooring or discolored drywall can be reasons to investigate.

Notice persistent odors

A damp or musty odor may justify checking for moisture, especially near plumbing, basements and enclosed spaces.

Check around likely sources

Areas near sinks, appliances, water heaters, windows, roofs and HVAC condensate lines deserve attention if there are signs of leakage.

Use inspection tools appropriately

Moisture meters and thermal cameras can support an investigation, but readings require context and do not prove a specific defect by themselves.

Address the cause

Repairs should address the moisture source and affected materials, not just conceal visible stains.
